Bengaluru: Former Congress R Sampath Raj mayor, wanted in connection with the Bengaluru violence that left four people dead, has been arrested, police sources said on Tuesday Bangalore Violence 2020 updates.

Sampath Raj, a congressman of Devara Jeevanahalli ward, was arrested in Bangaluru, sources said without revealing further details.

He had fled to a private hospital where he was admitted with COVID-19.

Police recently arrested one of his aides Riyazuddin who had assisted him and another Abdul Rakeeb Zakir of Congress to flee. He had given them a place to stay in Nagarhole in Mysuru.

Zakir is also wanted in the Bengal violence case.

Raj was wanted on charges related to violence that ravaged parts of the city on August 11. An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people stormed and set fire to the houses of Palestinian MP R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy and his sister over allegations that they were sent by his nephew.

The group also set fire to police stations in Devara Jeevanahalli and Kadugondanahalli on suspicion of nephew’s presence. Three people were killed in a shootout with police and another died from stomach injuries sustained in the violence.

In a lawsuit, Raj was charged with conspiracy to overthrow the political legislature, along with Zakir and a few others. Raj and Zakir were still at large and a search was ongoing, police said.
