How to Effect Coronavirus in Holi in India

With less than a week left for the festival of colours, Delhi’s big wholesale markets, including Sadar Bazaar, are quiet even as there is no dearth of colours and pichkaris.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other top political leaders said in the morning that they would not hold or be part of any ‘Holi milan’ gathering.

The announcements came in line with expert advice for people to reduce mass events to check the coronavirus spread.

By Wednesday night, Gurugram reported its first case when Paytm said one of its employees tested positive on return from Italy and is being treated at Safdarjung Hospital.

The company told the patient’s team members to get their health tests done immediately. Employees were also asked to work from home for a couple of days so that all Paytm offices in NCR can be sanitised.

COLOUR-LESS HOLI IN DELHI AND NCR?

While efforts are on to check and screen 88 people who came in contact with the Delhi man, the growing scare over coronavirus, which has claimed over 3,000 lives, mostly in China, has taken the colour off Holi that falls on March 10.

Families across the capital are cutting down on celebrations and cancelling pool parties. There’s hardly any demand for Chinese colours and pichkaris in Delhi-NCR Holi market as wary customers boycott these.

Instead of ordering sweets, colour and water guns, Punjabi Bagh resident Bhavana Arora (36) is busy looking for a Himalayan gateway. “It was a tough negotiation. My kids agreed not to play Holi only if we go for a road trip in the mountains,” said the mother of two.

“We cannot force people into not celebrating but it’s unsafe to play with colours at large gatherings. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiment. So meetings will be held to take a decision. We were discussing precautionary measures after the first positive case was found in Delhi. But when Prime Minister took the resolution, we sensed the magnitude of the problem,” said Neha Puri, General Secretary, RWA, Green Park Extension.

There were some voices of discontent too. Rajiv Kakria, president, dent, GK-I RWA, said, “The Prime Minister is saying he will not celebrate Holi. That doesn’t mean that people won’t celebrate too. The government should have rather taken strict measures to tackle coronavirus.”

BUSINESS TAKES A HIT

With less than a week left for the festival of colours, Delhi’s big wholesale markets, including Sadar Bazaar, are quiet even as there is no dearth of colours and pichkaris.

“The stocks usually arrive at least six-seven months in advance. By November, the market was full but there are hardly any buyers,” said Kulwinder Singh, a wholesale trader at Sadar Bazaar.

Amid the growing fear of coronavirus, Delhiites have already shunned Chinese products. Besides toys and crackers, colours and pichkaris from China are hugely popular in Indian markets.

Ravinder Singh, another trader, however, said the demand for herbal and organic colours has almost doubled this year Holi.

Meanwhile, the Vikas Marg Traders’ Association which used to hold a ‘Holi milan’ programme of 500-600 traders every year has decided to cancel their get-together.
