Bhopal tehsildar cremates COVID-19 patient after family refuses

Bhopal tehsildar government official performed last rites of a Bhopal man who died of COVID-19 after his family members refused to accept his body and cremate it.

The government official, a tehlishar, volunteered to perform the last rites of the deceased on Tuesday after his son refused to take his father’s body for cremation, officials said.

The deceased, a Shujalpur resident, was admitted to a private hospital in Bhopal after he suffered a paralytic attack earlier in April. He later tested positive for coronavirus on April 14 following which he was shifted to Chirayu Hospital, Madhya Pradesh government’s designated corona isolation facility, where he passed away on April 20.

While the body was kept in mortuary, the hospital said municipal authorities would hand over the body, which in turn passed on the buck to the district administration.

Officials said, family members of the man, his wife, son, and brother-in-law, reached Bhopal and were told that cremation would have to be done in Bhopal with full precautions. They, then, refused to accept the body.

According to Bhopal district administration, PPE kits were also made available to the family, but they refused to cremate. “When told that doctors and nurses who were attending their family members were also human beings, they asked the authorities to perform the last rites,” an official said.

Finally, Bhopal tehsildar Gulab Singh Bhagel volunteered to perform the last rites. He lit the funeral pyre while the family members stood at a distance.

Bhopal district collector, meanwhile, praised Bhagel and said COVID warriors are risking everything in the fight against the deadly virus.
