Mumbai: 

Veteran Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan, who mentored generations of actors and was fondly known as “Masterji“, died early this morning. She was admitted to Mumbai’s Guru Nanak Hospital on June 20 after complaining of difficulty in breathing and died of cardiac arrest. She was 71.

The three-time National Award winner had choreographed some of the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema.

The mandatory COVID-19 test done at the hospital showed a negative result.

“She passed away due to cardiac arrest at around 2:30 am at the hospital,” Ms Khan’s nephew Manish Jagwani told news agency PTI.

“Her last rites are over. I just attended and got back,” choreographer Remo D’Souza told NDTV.

“Woke up to the sad news that legendary choreographer #SarojKhan ji is no more. She made dance look easy almost like anybody can dance, a huge loss for the industry. May her soul rest in peace,” Bollywood star Akshay Kumar tweeted.

“She taught me a lot, not just about dance but so much more,” Madhuri wrote in an Instagram post, shared with priceless throwbacks.

Riteish Deshmukh wrote on Twitter: “Rest in Peace Saroj Khan ji. This loss is immeasurable for the industry & film lovers.Having choreographed more than 2000 songs she single handedly changed the landscape of how songs were shot. I had the pleasure of being Choerographed by her in Aladin. One tick off my bucketlist.”

“Saroj Ji’s name introduced the word ‘choreographer’ to my life. A genius who immortalized stars and the music that defined an era with her iconic work. May her loved ones find strength and courage at this terrible hour. There’ll never be another…(sic),” actor Nimrat Kaur tweeted.

“Saddened to hear of ace choreographer & three times national awardee Saroj Khan’s demise at 72. Many of the 2000+ iconic songs she choreographed have a permanent place in audiences’ hearts.  Deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues & fans,” Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh wrote on Twitter.

Saroj Khan, who has won three National Awards for Best Choreography for her work in Devdas, Jab We Met and the 2007 Tamil film Shringaram, is credited with choreographing more than 2,000 songs. 

In a career spanning over four decades, she has choreographed some of the most popular Bollywood tracks such as Ye Ishq Haaye featuring Kareena Kapoor from the 2007 film Jab We Met, Ek Do Teen featuring Madhuri Dixit from Tezaab, Dola Re Dola from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan.

She last choreographed for Tabaah Hogaye, featuring Madhuri from filmmaker Karan Johar’s production Kalank in 2019.

“I’m devastated by the loss of my friend and guru, Saroj Khan,” tweeted actress Madhuri Dixit, who was the star of several iconic Bollywood songs choreographed by Saroj Khan. The veteran choreographer died of a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on July 3. She was 71. Madhuri Dixit, who also worked with Saroj Khan in the choreographer’s last Bollywood project – 2019 film Kalank, credited Saroj Khan for her reputation as a legendary dancer: “Will always be grateful for her work in helping me reach my full potential in dance.” An emotional Madhuri Dixit added in her tweet: “The world has lost an amazingly talented person. I will miss you. My sincere condolences to the family.”

Saroj Khan, who stepped into Bollywood as an independent choreographer in 1974, was recognised for her genius after choreographing Sridevi and later Madhuri Dixit for several dance numbers.

Ek Do Teen from Tezaab, Tamma Tamma Loge from Thanedaar, and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga from Beta are some of Madhuri Dixit and Saroj Khan’s best-known collaborations. During her illustrious career, Saroj Khan won the National Award thrice, one of which was for the song Dola Re Dola, starring Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, from Devdas.

Saroj Khan’s choreography in Tezaab song Ek Do Teen, starring Madhuri, is the reason that Filmfare included the Best Choreography Award category. Saroj Khan became the first recipient of the award and holds the record of highest wins with eight Filmfare Best Choreography Awards. She won for choreographing Madhuri Dixit songs in films such as Chaalbaaz, Beta, Sailaab, Devdas among others.

In the later part of her career, Saroj Khan worked with Madhuri Dixit in 2014’s Gulaab Gang and 2019 movie Kalank.
